Severin Mevissen
Severin moved from Hamburg to the United States as a correspondent for German magazines in 1992. His work has been published in Geo, Merian, Spiegel, Stern, Musikexpress, Rolling Stone and many others. Eugene Robinson

The idea of “CHART – Notes to consider” is to publish a magazine totally outside of the conventional business circle. The high-class roundabout 200 pages magazine won’t be sold at stores. And it won’t be given away thoughtless. We have established a distribution model based on partners: Every partner of CHART will get up to ten copies. The person is then requested to give away these copies to ten people she or he identifies as readers. This model guarantees that chart won’t be a waste of paper, won’t be a magazine in the dirt or in the shelves. It really will wander from hand to hand. With a circulation of 2,000 copies. Published in English. Given away by partners from all over the world.

 

The first issue of CHART came out 2017 and dealt with “silence”. It was followed by the 2018 edition about “pain”. The newest issue of 2019 deals with “money”.

 

For CHART, our writers and photographers met with people like Little Simz and Jenny Wilson, Japandroids and Holly Herndon, Omar Rodríguez-López and Dieter Meier, The Mekons and Robert Forster. Other artists like Momus, Lydia Lunch or Bill Drummond of KLF wrote for us.

However, public authorities which may receive personal data in the framework of a particular inquiry in accordance with Union or Member State law shall not be regarded as recipients; the processing of those data by those public authorities shall be in compliance with the applicable data protection rules according to the purposes of the processing.

j) Third partyThird party is a natural or legal person, public authority, agency or body other than the data subject, controller, processor and persons who, under the direct authority of the controller or processor, are authorised to process personal data.

In addition, subscribers to the newsletter may be informed by e-mail, as long as this is necessary for the operation of the newsletter service or a registration in question, as this could be the case in the event of modifications to the newsletter offer, or in the event of a change in technical circumstances. The consent to the storage of personal data, which the data subject has given for shipping the newsletter, may be revoked at any time. 6. Newsletter-Tracking

The newsletter of the Clouds Hill GmbH & Co. KG contains so-called tracking pixels. A tracking pixel is a miniature graphic embedded in such e-mails, which are sent in HTML format to enable log file recording and analysis. The website of the Clouds Hill GmbH & Co. KG contains information that enables a quick electronic contact to our enterprise, as well as direct communication with us, which also includes a general address of the so-called electronic mail (e-mail address). If a data subject contacts the controller by e-mail or via a contact form, the personal data transmitted by the data subject are automatically stored. Such personal data transmitted on a voluntary basis by a data subject to the data controller are stored for the purpose of processing or contacting the data subject. Taking into account the purposes of the processing, the data subject shall have the right to have incomplete personal data completed, including by means of providing a supplementary statement.If a data subject wishes to exercise this right to rectification, he or she may, at any time, contact any employee of the controller.d) Right to erasure (Right to be forgotten)Each data subject shall have the right granted by the European legislator to obtain from the controller the erasure of personal data concerning him or her without undue delay, and the controller shall have the obligation to erase personal data without undue delay where one of the following grounds applies, as long as the processing is not necessary:
      • The personal data are no longer necessary in relation to the purposes for which they were collected or otherwise processed.
      • The data subject withdraws consent to which the processing is based according to point (a) of Article 6(1) of the GDPR, or point (a) of Article 9(2) of the GDPR, and where there is no other legal ground for the processing.
      • The data subject objects to the processing pursuant to Article 21(1) of the GDPR and there are no overriding legitimate grounds for the processing, or the data subject objects to the processing pursuant to Article 21(2) of the GDPR.
      • The personal data have been unlawfully processed.
      • The personal data must be erased for compliance with a legal obligation in Union or Member State law to which the controller is subject.
      • The personal data have been collected in relation to the offer of information society services referred to in Article 8(1) of the GDPR.

      If one of the aforementioned reasons applies, and a data subject wishes to request the erasure of personal data stored by the Clouds Hill GmbH & Co. KG, he or she may, at any time, contact any employee of the controller. An employee of Clouds Hill GmbH & Co. KG shall promptly ensure that the erasure request is complied with immediately.

      Where the controller has made personal data public and is obliged pursuant to Article 17(1) to erase the personal data, the controller, taking account of available technology and the cost of implementation, shall take reasonable steps, including technical measures, to inform other controllers processing the personal data that the data subject has requested erasure by such controllers of any links to, or copy or replication of, those personal data, as far as processing is not required.   • e) Right of restriction of processingEach data subject shall have the right granted by the European legislator to obtain from the controller restriction of processing where one of the following applies:

    • The processing is unlawful and the data subject opposes the erasure of the personal data and requests instead the restriction of their use instead.
    • The controller no longer needs the personal data for the purposes of the processing, but they are required by the data subject for the establishment, exercise or defence of legal claims.
    • The data subject has objected to processing pursuant to Article 21(1) of the GDPR pending the verification whether the legitimate grounds of the controller override those of the data subject.

    If one of the aforementioned conditions is met, and a data subject wishes to request the restriction of the processing of personal data stored by the Clouds Hill GmbH & Co. KG, he or she may at any time contact any employee of the controller. The employee of the Clouds Hill GmbH & Co. KG will arrange the restriction of the processing.

    f) Right to data portability

Call it papers or Benjamins, dough or bacon, call it bands, bucks or bones – money has always played an important role in hip hop, from Wu-Tang Clan rapping about dollar bills and depression to Migos’ paeans to consumer culture. Together, the musician Henrik von Holtum (a. k. a. Textor of Kinderzimmer Productions) and the journalist Aida Baghernejad set out to follow the money and discover the traces it has left in the history of hip hop.

 

Poverty is a formative, pivotal experience: it affects the brain’s neuroplasticity, its decision-making processes and the regulation of emotions. And the causes of poverty include structural, systemic factors. The example of the United States shows how poverty is weaponised to keep particular communities oppressed and marginalised over generations – especially people of colour, and within those, particularly Black Americans. Structural poverty, to put it bluntly, is the continuation of slavery by other means. Entire districts are cut off from economic and thus from social advancement and are systematically kept in a state of economic dependency. Poverty has a postcode.

 

In such districts – in “hoods” or “projects” – hip hop was born. The music’s relevance can barely be overstated. Public Enemy’s Chuck D once referred to rap as “Black America’s CNN” – the channel through which the burning issues are discussed, concerns raised, realities mediated. Little wonder, then, that the subject of money should be a constant preoccupation of rap lyrics. Though there are exceptions: The women of early hip hop in particular had other things to worry about and other battles to fight, not least against the business’s endemic and continuing sexism, which Queen Latifah took on in her 1993 track “U.N.I.T.Y.”

 

Lack of money is a formative experience, which explains the subject’s enduring relevance as a topic of hip hop discourse. Or, as Jay-Z put in in his 2004 uber-hit “99 Problems”: “If you grew up with holes in your zapatos / You’d celebrate the minute you was havin’ dough.”

 

The way money is discussed is a testament to the continuing diversity of hip hop, then and now. Hip hop has never conformed to the cliché of being all about money and bling bling, consumerism and showing off, but has always taken a more complex view of things. And being one of the dominant genres shaping modern pop, its many varieties reflect as many approaches to money – tracks glorifying consumerism as well as epic critiques of capitalism. Nonetheless, it is possible to identify four principal strands that may be taken together as telling a story, as tracing a development in social history: getting ahead, spending big, having doubts, and learning lessons.

I. Getting Ahead

Early hip hop tracks in particular often deal with getting ahead, climbing the ladder, with the desire to leave the projects. One part of that was to dwell on imagined wealth – wealth that these tracks might just make real.

Comparing this idea of wealth with the narratives of contemporary mainstream hip hop, Big Bank Hank’s desires sound quite modest. If anything, he seems to poke fun at his new, or at any rate, anticipated possessions. A pool “on the wall” is really a shower, two cars seem reasonable compared to a whole fleet, and the luxury hotel is just a motel – a Holiday Inn, we’re told. And yet an ambiguity is already apparent here. The narrator boasts that he wouldn’t give “a sucker or a bum” so much as a dime before immediately retracting that claim: He would give, though not till he had “made it again.” An added irony to the story is that Big Bank Hank didn’t even write these lines himself. He was not an MC – unlike Grandmaster Caz, a. k. a. Casanova Fly, who “lent” his friend and colleague a few rhymes for which he was never credited – nor did he ever see so much as a dime for his troubles.

 

“Rapper’s Delight” was the big bang, the first commercially successful rap single. Even in 1980, all hip hop’s core themes can be found condensed: cars (the Lincoln Continental, the Cadillac with a sunroof), women (to be seen rather than heard), clothes (as modelled by the Greatest Of All Time, Muhammad Ali), and above all money in all its forms – cash, cheques, credit cards – and more of it than he could ever spend. But it can never be enough to erase the fear of losing it by handling it too generously. No currency is as hard as security itself.

 

A few years later, Rakim makes the same point in “Paid in Full”:

“Paid in Full” stood out for its unusual rhyming chains alone, coupled with a steady narration so unlike the monosyllabic, symmetrical rhymes and energetic shouts favoured at the time. Rakim, by contrast, uses clear three-syllable rhymes like “Nothing funny” / “but the money”, but interjects a heavily emphasized “stop smilin’”; what follows, instead of a rhyme, is a doubled-up and thus exaggerated “money.” In this way, this track inaugurated a new era in rap, which came to use ever more innovative bars and complex themes.

 

Rakim’s vivid description of having no money in his pockets and looking to go straight, embarking on a so-called honest career after having dabbled in crime (“search for a 9 to 5, if I strive / Then maybe I’ll stay alive”) shows – as did the lyrics of “Rapper’s Delight” – just how modest the fantasies of getting ahead were in early hip hop. At the time, the stated goal was still to escape from a life of crime into a secure and steady life – one, moreover, in which Rakim could afford “a nice big plate of fish.” To attain such a stable existence by rapping won credits from audiences and the scene at large.

 

The lyrics turned out to be prophetic – a self-fulfilling prophecy, perhaps – with both the single and the album being big hits. And not just in the US, either. In a remix by Coldcut, it reached number 15 in the UK and number 12 in the German charts. Even the track sampled by Eric B. & Rakim, “Im Nin’Alu” by Ofra Haza, was given a second wind. It was a gift that kept on giving.

 

Far from being a thing of the past, such dreams cast in rhymes remain a central trope in hip hop. On the former’s already legendary debut album, Kendrick Lamar and Jay Rock frame their own desire to get rich in quite similar terms:

In the lyrics, Lamar tells how he and his friends divide their time between rhyming and robbery. He offers a wry take on how the rap tracks that he grew up with depicted wealth and consumerism as rational aspirations. Indeed, as the hook would have it, “Money trees is the perfect place for shade” – an expression of the hope that with wealth come security and contentment. Reality, however, presents an altogether different picture: Lamar is poor and his uncle, who believed in him, has been shot. There is only one thing that provides a respite for him: “Park the car, then we start rhymin’, ya bish (ya bish) / The only thing we had to free our mind (free our mind).” And by the way, Lamar really did lose an uncle named Tony to gangland violence. Are we to infer from this that the stick-ups, too, are based on personal experiences? Lamar prefers to give cryptic answers to such questions. Interviewers are told that all his lyrics draw on reality, if not necessarily his own. But there can be no doubt of his own experience of poverty and his dreams of getting ahead.

II. Spending Big

And yet there came a point when the scene had made it – not just individual rappers, but the genre as such. By the mid-1990s, hip hop had clearly become a mass-market commodity. And a profound change would overtake it. Of course, the genre has always kept changing. New styles came and went, new production techniques made new sounds possible, but also, and most importantly, new topics entered into the discussion. It was 50 Cent’s debut album, in particular, that marked something of a definitive paradigm shift in hip hop. Where in the beginning artists had told stories of getting ahead, of making it big in order to do precisely that, 50 Cent made an undertone of criminality a part of his brand and indeed a token of the authenticity of the mass-market product that bore his name.

As early as “In da Club”, his first single, 50 Cent makes his intentions perfectly clear: “I’m fully focused, man, my money on my mind / Got a mil’ out the deal and I’m still on the grind.” That is to say, he has no intention of ceasing to acquire wealth by means foul or fair. If that means having to change his style or companions deserting him, so be it.

 

The dirt supposedly clinging to 50 Cent thus became his emblem, the rotten conditions he never quite escaped proved his authenticity. We now see the romanticisation of the projects in full swing. It became ever more important to tell stories of supposed realness in which the artist is seen to be still standing with one leg mired in his past – but now with enough dough in his pockets to really go to town. Nor is such romanticisation particularly concerned with community. Instead, it tends to tell the story of a loner whose path was steep and rocky, and along which he learned to trust nothing and nobody. The narrative may be just that – a story – but it is one that resonates with the reality of the projects. The philosopher and sociologist Zygmunt Bauman has described the ghetto – among other “sites of forceful and stigmatizing social segregation” – as a “laboratory of social disintegration, atomisation and anomie.” Accordingly, 50 Cent’s life story testifies not to an active, shared community life and cooperation with others, but to social disintegration. His own advancement is front and centre. Even (former) companions are begrudged their success.

 

Much the same picture was drawn eleven years later by the German rapper Haftbefehl (“arrest warrant”):

Other rappers barely register, for after the success of his first album, the Baba Haft character runs wild here: “I’m supposed to talk about the major deal, signed with my penis,” he begins, followed by asking, presumably, his label to just cross out Rammstein, one of the most successful German music acts of all time, from their contract “and give me the copy” – perhaps the funniest line ever written in German hip hop. The title “Saudi Arabi Money Rich” refers to a line from Haftbefehl’s breakout hit, “Chabos wissen wer der Babo ist” (“A bro knows who’s boss,” a mix of German, Romani, and Rotwelsch, an old secret language with influences from German, Yiddish and Yenish) and is a celebration of his success and its tokens: Maserati, Versace, Dom Pérignon – and references to Israeli jewellers straddling anti-semitic cliché. Haftbefehl is seen enjoying his riches to the full, though for his playful humour it is worth noting just how and above all where he does so: at the Jumeirah hotel in Dubai and in Abu Dhabi. By contrast, that same year, German cloud rap artist LGoony can be heard opening his single “Millionen Euro” with the lines “Ich bin so reich / Millionen Euro in der Schweiz” (“I’m so rich / Millions of Euros in Switzerland”). While Haftbefehl spends conspicuously in the Arabian Peninsula, LGoony is talking about investing his money in Switzerland, as privileged white men like him have done for centuries. That the video should show him (albeit ironically) emerging from a local savings bank only serves to emphasize this middle-class background. The difference might also be expressed in the words of “Bad and Boujee” by American rapper Offset: “You know, young rich n***** / You know, so we ain’t really never had no old money / We got a whole lotta new money though, hah.” Old money and new money are no mere historical references, but serve as markers of class identity and ascribed ethnicity.

 

Offset’s wife, Cardi B, makes this issue explicit in her track “Money”:

Though she celebrates consumerism, not unlike Rakim and Big Bank Hank, she needs the money above all to provide security for her child – security here and now, that is, not in the form of a legacy. What she needs is cheese – money, that is – for her child, her egg. Cardi B is unquestionably one of the genre’s most successful female artists, and to have accomplished that as a woman in the world of hip hop, which remains largely patriarchal, is itself no mean achievement. As mentioned above, the comparative lack of women in hip hop is due not to any supposed lack of skills, but to continuing discrimination. As soon, however, as women find themselves eye-to-eye with hip hop’s cocks of the roost, they deal with similar topics. Yet they do so with a twist, as Cardi B’s example shows: she explicitly discusses her motherhood, and her claim to wealth is tied to the goal of providing for her child. Bad bitch motherhood in your face, bitch.

III. Doubts

Of course, money alone does not make for happiness, and countless tracks discuss the dark side of cash, riches, and capital – “C.R.E.A.M.” by Wu-Tang Clan, for one:

Like Rakim and Kendrick Lamar, Raekwon and Inspectah Deck bring their own experience of the life of crime to bear, though they express little hope that their situation might ever improve: “Neglected for now, but yo, it gots to be accepted / That what? That life is hectic.” Inspectah Deck goes so far as to mention depression, which he tries (unsuccessfully) to self-medicate by means of drugs. Such frank discussion of violence and drugs – both dealing in and using – was a novelty in hip hop in 1994, at a time when the mainstream, at any rate, appeared to cleave to the promise of getting ahead.

 

Was there no chance of things getting better? Certainly not three years later, in Notorious B.I.G.’s “Mo’ Money, Mo’ Problems”: “I don’t know what they want from me / It’s like the more money we come across / The more problems we see.” Biggie did not live to see the single hit the charts. Others were left to reap the profits, the money – his label and those holding performance and publishing rights. It is this domination of the scene by the profit motive of which Jeru the Damaja complains:

The track appeared on the fourth album by this rapper associated with Gang Starr – at a time, that is, when Jeru had already had the opportunity to gather some experience in the hip hop business. In “Da Game”, he adopts the perspective of a label boss who promises the aspiring young rapper fame and fortune: “Sign with me you’ll sell a million plus before the ink dries!” A million here, a hundred grand there, parties in New York, Los Angeles, and France – but the cruel awakening comes sooner than expected. The artist keeps on working and working, but the profits never materialise. There is an advance to be recouped, not to mention outlay for promotion and long-distance travel. And yet he keeps being told that better times are just around the corner – an illusion, as Jeru underscores, because the artist is fleeced and flogged. Without making the reference explicit, Jeru the Damaja here establishes a line of historical continuity with the exploitation of Black people in the United States, first as slaves, then by ghettoisation and incarceration, and finally even as they strive for success. This is a circle that’s hard to escape unless one is fully aware of what one is doing. Whether the artist himself knew what he was doing is less than clear. Though he released the album Divine Design under his own label, it was unable to repeat the success of his previous record.

IV. Learning Lessons

Assuming that it’s possible to make a bit of money, to beat the system at its own game and accumulate some capital by any kind of hustle, drug dealing, sex work, or the rap game – what to do with the cash? KRS-One saw money above all as a means to an end. As early as 1988, he outlined “My Philosophy”, including the following reflection: “who gets weaker: the king or the teacher? / It’s not about a salary, it’s all about reality.” It is this self-chosen position as a teacher to his community from which, just a few years later, he offers some practical advice on handling money:

Is this still gangster rap, or does it already belong in the “conscious” category? The answer is clearly: both. KRS-One and Boogie Down Productions don’t pass judgment on dealing as such, but accept it as a given, as the reality of the neighbourhood. What they demand is that, if somebody is going to sell drugs, the profits ought to be invested back into their own community. Since the system oppresses African American communities and denies them opportunities for advancement, it is up to themselves to create economic cycles of their own. The goal is to legalise the hustle and to provide a solid foundation of wealth for the community at large.

 

25 years later, Jay-Z adopts a similar stance, albeit from a completely different angle. Whereas KRS-One is making a theoretical argument – he has no money to invest himself – Jay-Z is speaking as hip hop’s first billionaire and accounting for an ascent he has achieved in real life:

Jay-Z regrets having bought fast cars at the beginning of his career rather than investing in real estate. And like Haftbefehl, he falls for an anti-semitic cliché – though he has since repeatedly claimed to have used it metaphorically and not actually to believe that all real estate in America is in Jewish hands. Despite this – at best – error of judgement, the track merits a closer look. Jay-Z opens it in spectacular, quite unprecedented fashion by taking nearly a bar’s pause after quoting, seemingly with a straight face, O. J. Simpson as saying that he is not a Black man. This is one of the longest gaps ever in a rap flow and flouts the rule that such ruptures are to be avoided – especially at the beginning of a verse, the first and last lines being of crucial importance. Yet this pause for thought is not just a novelty, but a highly effective means of ridiculing the foregoing statement. Because of course O. J. Simpson is a Black man, for all that he tried to deny his identity in the run-up to his trial. But Jay-Z is not one for dwelling on the lives of others, preferring instead to look back at his own career and his attitude to money.

 

Much like KRS-One, he advises his audience to turn away from the infrastructure created by white people, which has succeeded in cementing inequalities over recent decades. To make this point, he invokes the historical image of the house slave who felt closer to his oppressors on account of his supposedly privileged position and the preferential treatment he received. Don’t be like O. J., he seems to say, but take your cue from the field slaves, who were the ones who rose up against their exploiters. According to Jay-Z, today that means not accepting advances from the labels, to avoid getting in debt to the system, to keep yourself independent of it. What might the alternative be? In Jay-Z’s case, it means charging subscribers to TIDAL, his streaming service, $ 9.99 a month and thereby to earn more by his own work and that of others. That counsel, according to his lyric, is worth a million dollars at least.

 

Unlike KRS-One, however, his advice is less concerned with providing schools for his community than with turning his “rap game money” into serious capital. As with Cardi B, the prime beneficiary is supposed to be the rapper’s family, though less in order to secure its present wellbeing than to provide a legacy for the future. And here we find Jay-Z, one of hip hop’s most popular representatives, finally committed to the capitalist logic of commercialisation and exploitation: from money to Monet, from dealing in the hood to gentrifying it, and not least in swapping the guise of the teacher for that of the no-nonsense businessman.
