Alexander is a writer and musician based in London. He has written for The Independent, Kaput – Magazin für Insolvenz & Pop and Intro, publishes short stories and produces British pop music under the name Alexander’s Festival Hall.
Severin Mevissen
Severin moved from Hamburg to the United States as a correspondent for German magazines in 1992. His work has been published in Geo, Merian, Spiegel, Stern, Musikexpress, Rolling Stone and many others. He currently lives in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, where he spins records at his wife’s vinyl bistro “Bunny” whenever he doesn’t write.

Eugene Robinson

The idea of “CHART – Notes to consider” is to publish a magazine totally outside of the conventional business circle. The high-class roundabout 200 pages magazine won’t be sold at stores. And it won’t be given away thoughtless. We have established a distribution model based on partners: Every partner of CHART will get up to ten copies. The person is then requested to give away these copies to ten people she or he identifies as readers. This model guarantees that chart won’t be a waste of paper, won’t be a magazine in the dirt or in the shelves. It really will wander from hand to hand. With a circulation of 2,000 copies. Published in English. Given away by partners from all over the world.

 

The first issue of CHART came out 2017 and dealt with “silence”. It was followed by the 2018 edition about “pain”. The newest issue of 2019 deals with “money”.

 

For CHART, our writers and photographers met with people like Little Simz and Jenny Wilson, Japandroids and Holly Herndon, Omar Rodríguez-López and Dieter Meier, The Mekons and Robert Forster. Other artists like Momus, Lydia Lunch or Bill Drummond of KLF wrote for us.

6. Newsletter-Tracking

      • The personal data are no longer necessary in relation to the purposes for which they were collected or otherwise processed.
      • The data subject withdraws consent to which the processing is based according to point (a) of Article 6(1) of the GDPR, or point (a) of Article 9(2) of the GDPR, and where there is no other legal ground for the processing.
      • The data subject objects to the processing pursuant to Article 21(1) of the GDPR and there are no overriding legitimate grounds for the processing, or the data subject objects to the processing pursuant to Article 21(2) of the GDPR.
      • The personal data have been unlawfully processed.
      • The personal data must be erased for compliance with a legal obligation in Union or Member State law to which the controller is subject.
      • The personal data have been collected in relation to the offer of information society services referred to in Article 8(1) of the GDPR.

      If one of the aforementioned reasons applies, and a data subject wishes to request the erasure of personal data stored by the Clouds Hill GmbH & Co. KG, he or she may, at any time, contact any employee of the controller. An employee of Clouds Hill GmbH & Co. KG shall promptly ensure that the erasure request is complied with immediately.

      Where the controller has made personal data public and is obliged pursuant to Article 17(1) to erase the personal data, the controller, taking account of available technology and the cost of implementation, shall take reasonable steps, including technical measures, to inform other controllers processing the personal data that the data subject has requested erasure by such controllers of any links to, or copy or replication of, those personal data, as far as processing is not required.   • e) Right of restriction of processingEach data subject shall have the right granted by the European legislator to obtain from the controller restriction of processing where one of the following applies:

Drive west of Munich and you’ll find the little Bavarian town of Penzing, home to Funkstunde, a studio run by former Norddeutsche Rundfunk employee Johannes Brüning. Our bright-eyed guide is American producer Sylvia Massy – a woman who has worked with an incredible range of artists including Prince, Tool, Johnny Cash, Tom Petty, R.E.M., Slayer, and legendary producer Rick Rubin. She’s hanging out in Penzing for a week to do research for her next book, dedicated to vintage microphones. “This is a very special place to me,” she says. “I made a pilgrimage just to meet this specific console.”

Men behave very strangely – around women

Scheerer: Sylvia, I read your book Recording Unhinged: Creative and Unconventional Music Recording Techniques and it prompted a thought: about eight years ago I hired a young woman called Linda to work at my studio, firstly because she was really good at her job but I also thought that it’s really important to have women behind the console. Because they work totally differently and it makes a difference to bands and to the whole work atmosphere in the studio. But I recognise that men behave very strangely …

 

Massy: … around women?

 

Scheerer: Yeah. So when she leaves the room you hear stuff like: “She might be okay! Maybe she can do it …” But if there are questions about the recording process, people were ignoring Linda and coming directly to me. That’s not fair, because she is the engineer or the producer, sometimes I really just rent the place out. So she really had to prove herself. That’s why, when I got your book, I thought: Sylvia has produced so many bands, now she’s written a book and even illustrated it herself – does she also still think she has to prove that she can do all of it by herself?

 

Massy: You know, I didn’t even think about that. There was a time when I felt the necessity to really prove myself. I would dress in a kind of studio uniform. Not to distract, not to bring attention to the fact that I am a girl. The uniform was a t-shirt and jeans. I also found that the more aggressive I was in the studio, the less people would question my ability. So I became uncharacteristically aggressive. In my language – I would talk like a sailor! I am being polite right now, but normally I curse a lot. I’ve got this idea of insanity in the studio and it may come from that aggression: “Throw away your idea of what you think is going to happen – we’re gonna do it this way instead!” And I think it worked well. I also think that women in the studio are rare because most women are driven by other forces and choose jobs that are more social.

 

Scheerer: But why?

 

Massy: Because we are wired differently. Girls are different to boys. Girls are more wired to be in social situations, because of our instincts to build families.

 

Scheerer: Over generations and generations women have been told to be the social ones and not the techies. And that’s a problem.

 

Massy: Of course, we have fun in the studio and everybody is joking around, but women will generally gravitate towards those careers that allow them the most social interaction. I don’t know the hell what happened with me.

 

Scheerer: 90% of the musicians I work with are men.

 

Massy: Same here too.

 

Scheerer: Spontaneously I would say it doesn’t make any difference, because it is always about the music. It is always about getting the right take. You have to do everything for that – it doesn’t matter if you are a man or a woman. That’s kind of cool. Right? In which other job is it like that? For example, a friend of mine is a builder. She is the only woman among 50 men and of course she is treated extremely differently and everyone talks behind her back. Maybe this is part of the motivation to be the best and to keep doing it. But I experience that with my studio engineer Linda too. She did the same as you, always wearing a black uniform, no make-up. She would talk much less than I do in the studio, she would just do her job and be excellent. Because that’s the only thing she could do to convince the musicians that she’s as good as any male engineer.

 

Massy: It’s tough. But then I think that maybe because of that, the women need to develop their own specific speciality. They have to have a shtick. If they play a certain special instrument that nobody else can, like a violin and can put strings into productions, that’s a step up. And the whole thing is difficult, for women and also men, because you have to deal with the competition. So I would suggest anybody needs to have a speciality. My shtick: I throw things around and break stuff and plug in things wrong on purpose.

 

Scheerer: Oh! That’s interesting. I’ll try that. “No, that was on purpose.”

 

Massy: Or the stuff I am doing in Mix With The Masters: I don’t know the hell what I am doing here, I just naively move forward with the idea of putting an audio signal through a potato. Or through pickles. “What? It will never work!” Well, of course it does work.

 

Scheerer: Did you try to eat it afterwards?

 

Massy: No, but Dale from the Melvins did. He ate it! And then you go from there and start plugging in other things; meat, hot dogs, cheese sausages, fucking amazing. What I am saying is, build time for experimentation into the production. It may not be useful at all, but it doesn’t matter, everyone will remember it forever. It’s just a lot of fun.

 

Scheerer: That’s what I meant when I said to you earlier: “You wrote the book, and you illustrated it!” You do so much. And then I asked why … and you said “maybe I need a speciality”.

Massy: That’s my shtick. And it’s maybe why I’ve survived. But that also can become a handicap to you, because what’s next and next and next?

 

Scheerer: You can’t always be the vegetable lady.

 

Massy: And soon I am: “Hey, vegetable lady.” I come to a convention and they all scream: “Oh, it’s the potato lady.” Well, I don’t mind that – but I have to evolve. For instance that’s why I am writing this microphone book. I have to be taken very seriously if I write a book that everybody uses as the microphone bible. Much better than the potato lady.

 

Scheerer: What kind of book will it be?

 

Massy: It will be out 2019, so far there’s only a working title, something like The Great Vintage Microphone Book. There will be about 600 old mics in the book. This project is taking me half way around the world, because some of the microphones only still exist in certain places. The microphones that Johannes Brüning has here are exceptional, this is a man with very good taste. But he doesn’t like them all, he is very picky. So I have to go elsewhere for information on bad microphones.

Musicians in general are tortured individuals

Scheerer: I worked with Pete Doherty for three years on one record. That job was 80% making him do the record, ensuring he didn’t fuck up his life and getting him to concentrate on the music. That’s the social work element within the producer’s job.

 

Massy: Right! Right!

 

Scheerer: With Pete Doherty it was extreme, but I think in general a big part of music production is social business. You know, the singer can’t sing, because – you know that, you have been through that a hundred times – on the day in a studio they always get a sore throat. And that’s where the job starts. It’s not only the technical side as most people think.

 

Massy: That gives me an advantage over a lot of other male producers. Because nurturing is more natural to females. Not to say they get what they expect, I disturb them and don’t nurture them. A singer comes in coughing or there is a part he needs to sing and does not get it. I am not gonna waste time, so I tell him …. For instance while the Tool singer was recording “Undertow” he was unable to sing a part, to scream this part, in fact. I’d heard it live much, much better. So I said: “Stop! Go outside and run around the block five times and then come back and sing!” He was furious, so pissed. But then he ran around the block, came in and “Wahhhhhhhhhh” – that was the gig! It was a type of music that needed that kind of anger. There are other ways to distract the singer in a way they are not thinking about their throat anymore. Make them stand up a ladder and have the microphone above. They are that terrified of falling off the ladder, the singing part becomes suddenly very easy. Or, what Bob Ezrin did to Peter Gabriel: he literally taped him to the wall to keep him from thinking about his throat. You need lots of great ways to distract a singer because they are usually the biggest pains in the ass.

 

Scheerer: [smiles] You mean they are sensitive characters.

 

Massy: Musicians in general are tortured individuals. Don’t you find that to be true?

 

Scheerer: Yes, I think so. I had a phone call with my friend Omar Rodríguez-López from The Mars Volta and At The Drive-In two weeks ago. I asked him if he would be up for a talk about pain. And he was like: “Hell, yeah. Everything I do comes from pain. It’s just finding the right channels.” He was extremely convinced that every artist is really just channelling pain through art.

 

Massy: Well, there is a book that my partner and I are writing now called The Collateral Damage of Big Art. We all know that musicians, artists, painters, actors, and writers are a chaotic group of people, living often very disorganised lives, tragic lives. All the way from Beethoven and Mozart and Van Gogh, these people have financial problems they can’t get over, they have distracted relationships, they have substance abuse issues, they suffer from mental illnesses. All these things. The question is, does all of this make you more creative? The other observation is, because there is so much energy, so much focus on the creative part of their life, that maybe everything else falls apart.

 

Scheerer: Are you living a similar life?

 

Massy: I just think there is a strong connection between the creative mind and a chaotic life. And, yes, I am attracted to it. I mean, my partner takes care of the finances, so I don’t fall apart on that front. [laughs] But I can’t say that I am as bad as other people I have worked with in the past. If you think of Prince and Tom Petty: They died of fentanyl poisoning, self-medicated. And we lost people like Chester Bennington of Linkin Park or Chris Cornell of Soundgarden because of mental illness. There is a lot of pain with just being an artist and the weight of fame.

 

Scheerer: But would it be possible to create the same art without the pain?

 

Massy: There are some success stories. I think of Peter Gabriel. He managed to navigate huge eras of success with his music, with Genesis and his solo career and went on to become a businessman. He now runs Solid State Logic, an audio company that makes consoles. I want to carry out some research to discover what percentage of artists actually have their shit together. I reckon it’s very small.

 

Scheerer: When talking about collateral damage of great art, drug addicts struggling with their addiction are barely able to record their music. I know what it takes for many people being involved in the process to make this happen, dealing with these social aspects of being addicted to drugs. Those addicted artists are mentally abusing other people to realise their art. Do you think it’s worth that? The art that comes out of this huge mess of abuse?

 

Massy: I think that there are co-conspirators in there, too. If you are in a relationship with a crazy artist who is drunk and you enable that person to continue the abuse of alcohol, then I think you have some responsibility. An artist focused on the creation of art is convinced that everything else is secondary. Relationships are secondary. Making sure your bills got paid is secondary. Your own health is secondary. And that’s the collateral damage, and the girlfriend of a guitar player will suffer from that if they stick around. And of course there are always unrealistic expectations that one day everything will be perfect in a relationship with a touring rock musician. That you can go ahead, plan a family, all of that stuff. [laughs]

 

Scheerer: “He changed. He does not want that anymore. It was a phase.”

 

Massy: That’s a broken record, over and over again you hear these same stories. So there is this collateral damage, but it’s everyone’s responsibility.

If you’re lucky, failing gives you a special connection to the artist

Scheerer: At the beginning of a musical career, the social aspect is really important. In music, reputation always begins with word of mouth. People have to like working with you. Even if the results are not 100% brilliant, if they remember the session well, they might come back and you could make up for your mistakes. If you’re lucky, failing gives you a special connection to the artist. To fail together, to restart together – and then make the perfect record together.

 

Massy: Interesting. The other aspect of that is: going on with something although you are sure it will fail. And when it suddenly works against all odds … then you’re champions together. That’s even better: It should have failed but we made it work! The memorable part of that is important, making memories that last.

 

Scheerer: You are so right, it is all about the shared memories.

 

Massy: I have another story from working with Tool. I thought: what is the most obnoxious sound that we could record? A piano smashing. So, I thought, throwing it off the roof would be the best way to get the sound of a piano smashing. But it turned out you need to get a crane, but no crane operator wanted to do it. And the label wasn’t gonna pay for it. Anyway, I did buy two pianos for 50$ and we just dragged them into the studio and I got permission to bring a shotgun and sledgehammers into the studio. I got everyone some eye protection, I set up special mics on the pianos – and then we destroyed them. We used a sequencer to create a programmed sound from the noise, you can hear that on “Disgustipated”, the last song of the Undertow album.

 

Scheerer: I also worked with a sledgehammer. I worked with Faust a lot. We recorded a seven minute song that is called “Tell The Bitch To Go Home”. In one bit we wanted that white noise sound without using a synthesizer. So Jean-Hervé Péron, one of the founders of Faust, came up with an idea how to create it: we had a huge metal bin in the studio, so he brought a flamethrower. I put one mic under and one above the metal bin and he would go: “Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.”

 

Massy: That’s good. I once threw a guitar over a cliff in Malibu, but sadly we had no use for the recordings on the record. But the band and I have a memory we share forever. When we’re seeing each other we always say: “Remember when we threw that guitar off a cliff?” It’s a great story.

Prince was not immortal

Scheerer: Sylvia, have you ever made a record that never came out?

 

Massy: Yeah, of course, several.

 

Scheerer: Because they were not good enough? Because the people involved started to hate it? Because record companies just failed to put it out?

 

Massy: Well, that, and because the band would explode before the album would come out. Sometimes in the studio even.

 

Scheerer: Classic. I have a record like that lying around too. I hate it! It’s so painful when a piece of art cannot find its way to the public. And then there are the ones the label never releases. I have one like that too, I really worked hard on it and I thought it had hits on it. But they said: “No.”

 

Massy: As a producer you always have to remember: it’s not your own music. If it’s not gonna come out – don’t care too much, move on. But there is stuff that I wish would have come out. That would have been great. But it never will. Especially the Prince stuff. I worked with him for three years. He was so prolific that he would write and record a new album every week. There was no way that the label, any label, could put out that much material, it would just saturate the audience.

 

Scheerer: What was happening to the material?

 

Massy: It was less about him saying “no, that can’t come out”, more about the label saying “no, we are not putting out another record. It’s too soon.” So he would rewrite and rewrite and reorganise it. And finally, when the label would give him a green light, it might be two years of material to pick through. But every musician likes the recent material the most, so a lot of great music was left behind. The music that is unreleased could keep coming out for decades.

 

Scheerer: How was the working process with Prince?

 

Massy: He would have at least three studios and more likely five studios working at the same time and he would bounce between rooms. I was an engineer in one of those rooms. He would come in and compose a song on the spot: using a bass keyboard and a drum machine. “This is the verse, this is the chorus, this is the bridge, here is the outro.” Then he would grab a guitar and play these licks, would leave and work in another room and I would assemble it. Later he would come back and do the vocals. When doing so I had to leave, he did not wanna sing with anyone in the room. He was self-conscious when it came to the signing – which is strange because on stage he had no problems as it seems. So I set up a U87 mic up over the console and he sang alone onto analogue tape. Four hours might go by and when I would come back to the room, the song was pretty much finished and he left with a note: “mix it”. So there were two songs per studio written in a day, played from scratch with vocals and mix. This was from 1989 till 1992 – in the very first of my LA years.

 

Scheerer: Prince sounds like a man addicted to recording …

 

Massy: Absolutely addicted. And this happened day and night. I was on a pager and would get called at 4 in the morning: “Come to the studio!” He was extremely mean. No charity. He wasn’t trying to make things easier for anybody. So you would be sitting waiting for him to show up. Very little communication. He was very distant, he would never have anybody close, besides his half-brother maybe, but even he wasn’t that close to him.

 

Scheerer: Do you think he created his amount of great music because he needed something that was close to him?

 

Massy: I don’t know if it was that deep.

 

Scheerer: If you work in such an addicted fashion and you do not have any social contacts anymore, that must be a strange situation …

 

Massy: There was the need for admiration. The thing is, he was as super human as a musician can get. Any instrument that he picked up he could play better than anyone else. He engineered better than anyone else. And he was faster and better at everything than everyone else. But he was not immortal. As it turned out.

Very good, very strong coffee

Scheerer: How did you end up in LA?

 

Massy: I lived in San Francisco during my punk rock days, having my own band, produced some other underground and punk bands from the Bay Area. The next step would be to move to LA because every promising band would do the same. But I couldn’t get a job in a studio, so I was working at Tower Records. You would think I would be able to get a job. But anybody who moves to this city starts from the bottom.

 

Scheerer: Matt Wignall, producer of the Cold War Kids, told me the same story. They just started a new band and even though they worked with the Cold War Kids and Mando Diao in the past and by that are in the scene, they wanna start with the new band in Europe – and then take it back to LA. Why? Because in LA there are 500 shows a night and everybody is famous and has at least five side projects. It is so hard to cut through the noise in the States.

 

Massy: And did it work?

 

Scheerer: We haven’t started yet. We’re going to do the record in Costa Rica now.

 

Massy: You’re going to Costa Rica? That sounds fun. Cool.

 

Scheerer: Was it painful to be back to a student job instead of starting a career? After everything you’d achieved in San Francisco?

 

Massy: It was, and it was also a very dark time. Because I was deep into my alcohol consumption … Well, I enjoyed cocaine at that time quite a bit too. I had difficulties controlling myself. One day I came to the famous Larrabee Studios and started to get good jobs working with big artists. But one morning, the day after my birthday, I partied the night before and I could not get up, I was sick. And I missed a session. That was the day I had to make a decision: What do I wanna do with my life? Party hard and work at the counter of a record store? Or create a legacy and do something more important.

 

Scheerer: Out of interest, who was waiting at the studio that day?

 

Massy: I can’t really remember. It was probably someone like Bobby Brown. It was a very difficult decision and I had a hard time adjusting. But these considerations helped me a lot. I’ve drunk a lot of coffee every day since then. I actually have to have coffee all the time. Very strong, very good coffee. Like this one.

 

Scheerer: Did you make some of your own and bring it here?

 

Massy: Yeah, I make it in the hotel in the morning. I have the kettle, my own French press, I brought my own coffee, my own creamer. It’s like a laboratory. I have to have it. I don’t drink any alcohol anymore. No other drugs. This is it. I haven’t had a drink since 1989. And I don’t miss it. I have a great time. I don’t need a drink to have fun or be wild. But to come back to the question: my time at the counter at Tower Records wasn’t wasted because it was a good place to find clients. At that time there were a lot of musicians working for Tower Records. That’s where I met the guys from Tool. If I hadn’t been forced to work in retail I would never have had that connection to these musicians.

 

Scheerer: And then you continued as a freelancer?

 

Massy: Yes, it was the time when I connected with Prince. Once Tool were ready to do their record I went freelance to produce that album. But before that I had to say “No” to Prince who offered for me to move to Minneapolis to live and work at Paisley Park. The moment I said “No” I never heard from him again. I had to make the choice: Prince or Tool. And I wanted to have control of my own world.

Soulful people, soulless music

Scheerer: What kind of music do you like to record the most?

 

Massy: I like rock’n’roll. I grew up on rock’n’roll – that was my first choice. I also love funk, I love reggae, I have an appreciation for jazz, even though I haven’t recorded any. I love roots and country music, classical music is fantastic. So I actually tried really hard to accept any opportunity to do something outside the rock genre. And I still do. Because I don’t think good music is limited to popular music only. There is still so much to learn. I just recently discovered classic vintage jazz, which blows my mind.

 

Scheerer: You know, sometimes I rent my studio out to all sorts of people. And sometimes engineers come in who say: “Well, for me, it’s just frequencies. I don’t really listen to the music, it just has to sound good. It’s my job, it doesn’t matter.” But it’s really hard for me to work like that, I have to have some sort of stake in the music. And if not in the music at least in the person who is performing it. Sometimes you have a person who has a soul but who produces soulless music because the industry demands it. But I couldn’t do it.

 

Massy: I have a bias against rap music, I’ll admit that.

 

Scheerer: But you worked with Rick Rubin, who is deeply into hip hop?

 

Massy: Yeah. And I did a project with Rick called the Geto Boys which is the rudest, nastiest rap music ever. It certainly has emotion and tells a story, but I find it an unpleasant genre for me. I turn down all rap projects. The composition can be fun sometimes. But usually the content of the lyrics is just unreal. Silly. Deliberately inflammatory.

 

Scheerer: Of course, you as a female engineer listening to these absurd lyrics – you must …

 

Massy: I don’t like it at all!

 

Scheerer: I mean, it’s pretty hard for a man to listen to. I feel ashamed … Same way. Especially from a female perspective.

 

Massy: Yes.

 

Scheerer: Did you talk to Rubin about that?

 

Massy: Well, here’s the thing about him, he would never put me into a job that I wasn’t a good fit for. That’s the magic of Rick: he is not a technician, nor a musician, but he is a fan. He will take a project and he will insist on 100 to 300 songs being submitted before he chooses 20, 24 to be recorded. After that he chooses the studio and the team. And then he puts everybody in the same room. When he worked with Johnny Cash he was there for him literally every day. But when working with a band like System Of A Down he said: “You guys work on that now and I’ll be back in four days.” Then he would come in and listen and make comments. I think his great sense of doing what seems right for him was part of why I was not chosen for rap projects. I was chosen for Smashing Pumpkins and Danzig.

 

Scheerer: So he wouldn’t use your pain of hating rap music to make the most brutal rap record of all time?

 

Massy: He might put the musicians in a situation like that. Put the fire and water in the same room to see what happens. But not in the case of my projects with him, they were more positive than negative in that regard.

I like the slight panic

Scheerer: You’ve got your own studio these days. Where do you call home?

 

Massy: Ashland, Oregon. In an old church. It has a Neve 8038 console and just a ton of gear, if you could only imagine. We put in a fireplace …

 

Scheerer: … a fireplace place next to the Neve? Oh, my tech would hate that, he would say: “Look at all the invisible dust particles.”

 

Massy: It’s a fake fireplace. But it looks real – and it’s really fancy.

 

Scheerer: Does it make sounds as well?

 

Massy: No. But it does generate actual heat if you want to! You put it on with a remote. It does what it’s supposed to do: add ambiance.

 

Scheerer: So you have the cast-away experience: look, everyone, I made fire!

 

Massy: It’s great, people get nervous and move their guitars away from the fireplace. I like this slight panic. You can call this another one of my shticks.
